The Last Mission (Laurel-Leaf Historical Fiction) In 1944, as World War II is raging across Europe, fifteen-year-old Jack Raab dreams of being a hero. Leaving New York City, his family, and his boyhood behind, Jack uses a false I.D. and lies his way into the U.S. Air Force. From their base in England, he and his crew fly twenty-four treacherous bombing missions over occupied Europe. The war is almost over and Hitler near defeat when they fly their last mission -- a mission destined for disaster. Shot down far behind enemy lines, Jack is taken prisoner and sent to a German POW camp, where his experiences are more terrifying than anything he'd ever imagined. |

"The lieutenant is writing in his notebook again," said one of his soldiers. He stepped closer to the fire to warm his hands even better. "I wonder what he is writing about this time." "The lieutenant started writing in his notebook when we landed at Normandy," answered another soldier calmly, with his hands over the fire's flames. "I think he is superstitious about writing in it." "What do you mean?" "Some men carry lucky medallions or some such thing. The lieutenant believes that if he keeps writing in the notebook, we'll all get home one day." "I hope he writes a bunch today," answered one of the other soldiers. Suddenly, a jeep coming out of the town slid to a stop beside the road, next to the platoon of soldiers standing around the fire. |
