"The lieutenant is writing in his notebook again," said one of his soldiers. He stepped closer to the fire to warm his hands even better.
"I wonder what he is writing about this time."
"The lieutenant started writing in his notebook when we landed at Normandy," answered another soldier calmly, with his hands over the fire's flames.
"I think he is superstitious about writing in it."
"What do you mean?"
"Some men carry lucky medallions or some such thing. The lieutenant believes that if he keeps writing in the notebook, we'll all get home one day."
"I hope he writes a bunch today," answered one of the other soldiers.
Suddenly, a jeep coming out of the town slid to a stop beside the road, next to the platoon of soldiers standing around the fire.
